Drink Driving  And  Cost

In 2011 55,000 drivers across the country wrongly thought they could get away with drink driving. If you think you will not be caught, you are wrong. The police are trained to spot all the tricks  drink drivers use to avoid being caught.
  • They can ask you to take breath test just for suspecting you've been drinking or if you commit a traffic offence whislt driving.
  • You do not have to be involved in crash.

The Law: The effects of alcohol on your driving can include;

  • Slower reactions.
  • Reduced field of vision.
  • Poor judgement of speed and distance.
  • Overconfidence and increased risk taking, increasing the danger to all road users including yourself.

 The Cost:

  • A Court conviction
  • Driving ban of at least 12 months
  • An endorsement of your licence for 11 years
  • A criminal record
  • Daily inconvenience of travelling to work, shops, cinema etc
  • Having to sell your car to pay fines
  • Difficulties in finding new employments
  • Having to explain your criminal record at every job interview.

The Penalties if convicted:

  • Refusing to provide a specimen - 6 months impesonment, fine of up to £5000 and at least 12 month ban

  • Causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drink or drugs -14 years imprisonment, unlimited fine, disqualification for at least 2 years and mandatory extended driving test.
  • The Alternatives and safe options:
  • Book a taxi and book it early in the evening.
  • Agree who is driving and NOT drinking, at the start.
  • Use public transport to get home
  • If you are at friends house, stay overnight.
  • Do not get into a car driven by someone who's been drinking.

Failed Excuses:

  • " I had a drink but it was at lunch time "
  • "I feel fine to drive "
  • " I've only had couple "
  • " I had a meal "
  • " I can handle my drink "
  • " i am only going down the road "
  • " I am driving slowly and carefully "
